Call for Art – 2017 print design


The Old Hallowell Day Committee  is looking for art to be used for the 2017 Old Hallowell Day poster, T-shirt and program cover.

With its population of 2,300, Hallowell has been a regional center for artists and musicians for decades.  Known for a thriving nightlife and live music scene, Hallowell also boasts small businesses, antique stores, a lively waterfront, taverns and restaurants and offers a laid-back, colorful lifestyle.  Hallowell was founded in 1762 and so has a long, fascinating and colorful history.

We are looking for a piece of art that will embody Hallowell’s unique creative spirit.


Call:  The Old Hallowell Day Committee is looking for a painting or piece of graphic art.  Artists may submit up to three sketches, preliminary designs, or photographs of finished work.  Submission concept sketches must be emailed before March 15, 2017 (see instructions below).  The committee requires the finished art by April 30, 2017.

Color & design:  Use color but avoid large blocks of solid color, as it is difficult to transfer to a T-Shirt.  Don’t use too much white.  Avoid watercolors.  Screen printing does not work as well with watercolor painting.  Design should be vertical, with the finished size of 19 by 15 (size of poster), or proportionally larger.  Print indicating “Old Hallowell Day 2017” will be added at the border of the painting.  The OHD Committee will frame the painting and award it as the prize in the OHD art raffle.

Stipend:  The winning artist will receive $500, with the first payment of $200 awarded when the work is to be started, and $300 to be paid upon completion.  The artist will receive an Old Hallowell Day commemorative print.

Public relations:  A write up in the Old Hallowell Day program booklet will feature our art and artist.  Ideally there will be an unveiling in June, during which the artist should be present and available to sign the poster.  Posters and T-shirts will be available for sale to the public. Old Hallowell Day will be celebrated on July 15, 2017.

Details: The winning artwork becomes the property of the Old Hallowell Day Committee, the image and likeness to be used as described above and for any other purpose.  The OHD art jury retains the right to select any design or none at all and their decision is final.  When a submission is preliminarily chosen, the artist may be asked to make modifications to meet the needs of the Old Hallowell Day Committee.  Submissions will be judged on their appeal to a broad target audience, and the ideal design will be suitable as wall art and for apparel.
